GENDER EXPRESSION CARE WORKSHOPS

You don’t need to do this alone.

Our 8-week online workshop helps trans and gender-diverse adults build skills like gender affirming voice, cosmetics, and wardrobe styling, so that you can explore and deepen your connection to your identity, presentation, and self-expression.

Each 2h session begins with practical instruction, focusing on topics like feminizing / masculinizing voice training, cosmetics, hair, and wardrobe styling. Then, we break into small groups led by licensed gender-specialized therapists, to help you apply these skills into your daily life and relationships, and explore them in a safe space with peers.

Monica Prata is the Director of Gender Expression Care at Kaiser Permanente, founder of the Gender Expression Care framework, and co-author of a landmark paper published in NEJM Catalyst.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • For many trans women and trans feminine people, the question of how they're seen — being recognized as the women they are, and choosing when and how to be visible as trans — is real and urgent. GEC doesn't treat presentation as shallow or vain. It treats it as what it is: a meaningful expression of identity and a practical matter of safety, deserving of thoughtful, skilled support. Whether you're looking for a comprehensive MTF styling guide or want help developing a consistent, confident presentation that feels like you, GEC offers a structured framework and a peer community to work through it with.

  • Online, affirming, and built around your goals

GEC workshops are fully online, which means trans women and trans feminine adults across the country— including those in California, New York, and beyond— can participate. Sessions are small-group, led by gender-specialized therapists and licensed practitioners, and designed to let you set your own vision for where you want to land.

This isn't a makeover show. It's a skills-based, therapeutically grounded program for trans women, nonbinary people, and gender-diverse adults who are ready to invest in their own expression— on their own terms.

We meet for two hours a week for eight weeks.

  • We know that for many trans women and transfeminine people, the question of identity presentation— how to be read as a woman, how to feel less visible as trans in spaces that don't always feel safe— is real and urgent. GEC doesn't treat presentation as shallow or vain, but an essential matter of identity and safety. It treats it as what it is: a practical need with emotional weight, deserving of thoughtful, skilled support.

Whether you're looking for a comprehensive MTF styling guide, or just want help developing a consistent, confident presentation— GEC gives you a structured framework and a peer community to work through it with.

  • GEC workshops welcome trans men, transmasculine adults, and FTM participants who are working on the practical side of gender expression— not just the internal journey, but the daily, embodied experience of moving through the world as yourself. Many transmasculine participants arrive having figured out a lot on their own: binders, haircuts, a wardrobe that's getting closer. What they're looking for is a structured space to go further— to work on voice, presence, and confidence in public with guidance from people who actually understand transmasculine presentation, not just gender in the abstract. GEC covers the full range of transmasculine expression goals: masculinizing wardrobe and styling, voice coaching for a register that feels like yours, movement and body language, and the confidence work that ties it all together. Sessions are small-group and peer-supported, which means you're not just receiving instruction— you're building relationships with other people in similar places, sharing feedback in real time, and developing the kind of grounded self-assurance that outlasts any single session. Whether you're early in your transition, well into it, or refining an expression that's been evolving for years, GEC meets you where you are. Your vision for where you want to land is the starting point— not a checklist someone else wrote.

  • Not everyone who needs support with gender expression is navigating a binary transition— and GEC was built with that in mind. If you identify as nonbinary, genderfluid, agender, or you're working out what your gender means to you, this workshop has a place for you. Nonbinary and genderfluid expression comes with its own specific challenges: how to build a wardrobe that communicates an androgynous or fluid identity without defaulting to the same few archetypes; how to develop a vocal presence that feels like yours rather than performed; how to move confidently through spaces that still largely operate on binary assumptions. These questions deserve the same structured, skilled attention as any other expression goal. GEC sessions give genderfluid and nonbinary participants clear frameworks for translating identity into practical expression choices— style, voice, movement, cosmetics, and more. The small-group format is particularly valuable here, because seeing how other people with different nonbinary identities are navigating similar questions tends to open up possibilities you might not have considered on your own. And if you're still figuring out where you land— if your identity feels genuinely in motion rather than settled— that's not a barrier to joining. It's actually one of the best reasons to. GEC is a skills-based program, but it's also a space for exploration, and many participants find that working on the practical dimensions of expression helps clarify things that were harder to access through reflection alone.

  • Each session is structured around the skills that matter most when you're moving through the world as a transgender individual: identifying your presentation goals, developing movement that feels like yours, building a wardrobe that affirms how you see yourself, and finding confidence in social settings where you want to feel grounded and at ease. Topics covered across the 8 weeks include:

    • Identifying and communicating your presentation goals — getting clear on what you actually want your expression to convey, and learning how to articulate it to stylists, clinicians, and the people in your life who support you

    • Gender-affirming voice training led by a licensed Speech Language Pathologist — practical techniques for finding a voice that feels like yours, whether you're feminizing, masculinizing, or working toward a register that sits outside the binary

    • Gender-affirming makeup tutorials and skincare — feminizing, masculinizing, and neutralizing techniques tailored to your features and goals, not a one-size-fits-all look

    • Gender-affirming outfit ideas and wardrobe styling — how to dress in ways that feel authentically yours, whether you're building a feminine, masculine, or androgynous presentation

    • Gender-affirming movement coaching — how to move through the world with ease and intention, from posture to gesture to gait, in whatever direction your expression goals take you

    • Confidence coaching — building the internal foundation that makes all the external skills actually stick, including how to share pronouns and navigate coming out in everyday situations

  • Not at all. We believe that gender constructs are limited and limiting. GEC workshops serve as a test kitchen for exploring an expansive range of expressions within your chosen identity. We help you navigate to your unique persona and cultivate an external expression that feels authentic to you.
